Squads Sessions

Squads Sessions in Caringbah

Squad sessions for every stage, from Mini Squad to Performance, led by Head Coach Bruce Vyvyan. Book a free squad assessment.

Our squad sessions are run by a team of experienced coaches, all working under Head Coach Bruce Vyvyan. Bruce has spent more than 25 years helping swimmers reach high levels, through deep technical knowledge, smart training and a positive mindset. He sets the program and oversees every squad, so swimmers get the same high standards from their first session after Dolphin right through to national-level competition.

Squad levels and requirements

Mini squads

  • Sessions: 45 minutes each. We recommend 2 to 3 sessions a week

Dry land training

Make the most of your training with dry land sessions before squads.

Competitive and Performance squads include dry land sessions. The world's most successful swimmers don't get there on pool time alone; a balanced program with weekly dry land work makes the difference.

How dry land works

  • When: 4:45 to 5:15pm, straight before afternoon swim sessions, Monday to Friday. Competitive Transition has dry land on Mondays and Thursdays.
  • Compulsory: if your swimmer is booked into that afternoon swim session, dry land is part of it.
  • Stretching: 5:00 to 5:15am on weekdays and 7:00 to 7:15am on Saturdays, for the same three squads.
  • Wear and bring: comfortable sports clothes, joggers, a towel and a water bottle.

Why dry land training makes faster, healthier swimmers

  • A stronger core, a better body position. A strong, stable core keeps swimmers long and flat in the water, so less effort is lost to drag.
  • More power off the blocks and walls. Leg and core strength turns into faster starts, turns and underwater kicks, where races are often won.
  • Healthier shoulders. Swimmers repeat the same arm movement thousands of times a week, and shoulder injuries are among the most common in the sport. Strengthening the muscles around the shoulder helps keep swimmers in the pool, not on the sidelines.
  • Better mobility. Flexible shoulders, hips and ankles allow a longer stroke and a stronger kick.
  • Body awareness and habits for life. Swimmers learn to control their bodies on land, so technique changes stick in the water, and they build training habits that last well beyond swimming.

How swimmers move up through the squads

Moving through Squads

Squads work differently to learn to swim. Swimmers can stay in one squad for months or even a year, depending on attendance and effort. Chat to your child's coach any time for feedback on their progress.

Assessments

Our Head Coach makes every squad assessment. Swimmers are assessed throughout the program, not on a set test day, and move up only on the Head Coach's recommendation. Want to know how your child is tracking? Please see the Coach Rules and Pool Etiquette download available below for further information about the best way to discuss your child's development

Taking a break of 6 weeks or more? Swimmers are reassessed when they come back and may not return to the same squad.

The Southern Sydney Swim Team

Swimmerz Academy is proud to be home to the Southern Sydney Swim Team

Swimmerz Academy is home to the Southern Sydney Swim Team, the club for our squad swimmers who want to race competitively. One of the fastest clibs in the Sutherland Shire, swimmers train together at Swimmerz Academy, compete side by side at swim meets, and make friends who love the pool as much as they do.

Not sure yet? Every swimmer can try two free club nights before joining. Members can race at club nights, and Competitive Swimmer members can race at outside meets too.

Already with another club? You can transfer through Swim Central any time.
